Cabinet Painting & Refinishing

The Process, What We Use, and Why it Matters!

At Licursi Creations, you want to make sure your paint job will last for years to come. Before we start any job, it is imperative that we properly prep the cabinets, cabinet doors, and the space.

Step 1: Preparation

So you booked your job! What’s next? Every single door is removed and taken offsite to our 8,000 square foot warehouse to be washed, sanded, and prepped for paint. Doors are scrubbed with Trisodium Phosphate (TSP), which is similar to degreaser, but more for industrial purposes to remove debris and buildup. Once cleaned, each door is checked for blemishes, like scratches, gouges, chips, or separation. We correct any issues, sand them down, and take them to the commercial paint booth in our shop.

When we get onsite, we do the same cleaning method as we do with the doors for the boxes. Our crew cleans every cabinet box and begins taping and covering hard surfaces. We use roof underlayment to cover the floors and the countertops. Why? It is extremely durable and waterproof ensuring that things stay safe! Walls, windows, and ceiling is taped and covered in the spray areas. Appliances that can’t be removed or relocated are covered with plastic.

To keep the area contained, we completely enclose it with plastic sheeting and install a HEPA certified exhaust system to drive fumes out of the home! Our tools are also attached to a HEPA certified dust extractors to ensure minimal debris. Once we have prepared the area, we are ready for step 2!

Step 2: Painting

It is important to use quality products like Envirovar, an industrial grade conversion varnish finish. Conversion Varnish is a chemical-cured, fast-drying finish that consists of 2 parts: the finish and an acid catalyst that's added just before spraying. The catalyst creates a chemical reaction (cross-linking) in conjunction with added heat-curing that creates the hardest, most durable finish available on the market.

We paint doors and custom-built boxes in our commercial paint booth, while everything else is painted on-site. The first stage in the paint process is to prime everything with a single coat of primer. Our primer dries in 30 minutes and sounds down to a powdered finish. Once primed, we spray on the top coat. We spray one coat on the backs and two coats on the front of the doors. We sand the doors in between coats to ensure proper adhesion of the finishes. Our top coats dry between 40-60 minutes and are fully cured in 12 hours. Why is that important? It means that after 12 hours of painting, you are able to put everything away!

With our extensive color options, we can make any space stand-out! Whether it is custom glaze, color, or painting your island a different color than the cabinets, we have you covered!

Step 3: Cleaning Up

Cleaning is arguable the most important part. We take the time to painstakingly clean from top to bottom. Every surface, every nook and cranny, and even the floor are meticulously vacuumed and swiffered so that you can enjoy a truly immaculate space. We believe that through quality cleaning, we're not just showcasing the final product but also giving our customers peace of mind that their new space is ready to enjoy.

After all, the last thing you want is to invest in a quality product only for it to not last because of improper preparation or application. So whether it’s painting a few cabinets or renovating an entire room, using high-quality products and prepping everything beforehand are important ways to ensure that your space stands the test of time.
